About

Hi, I'm the writer behind Everyday Open Source — a series exploring free, open-source tools that quietly replace the paid apps most of us use without a second thought.

It started with a simple realization: so many everyday conveniences — syncing files, taking notes, managing passwords, backing up photos — run through a company's server by default, often for a monthly fee, when an open-source alternative could do the same job on your own terms.

Each post in this series covers one tool, told as a real story: the problem that pushed me to look for an alternative, what it was like setting it up, and what actually changed once I started using it day to day. No jargon-heavy feature dumps — just practical, honest accounts of tools that made a real difference.

What you'll find here

  • Real setups, not just feature lists — how each tool fits into an actual daily routine
  • No sponsorships — every tool covered here is something I use myself
  • A new tool, regularly — one story at a time, building into a full toolkit for a more private, self-owned digital life

Why open source

Open-source tools put you back in control — of your data, your privacy, and your costs. You're not locked into a subscription, and you're not trusting a black box with your most personal information. That's the thread running through every post here.
